I Have Survived Learning 2.0!

It is finished! And I have survived. Actually, I have more questions about most all of these lessons, but I think in time I may discover those questions myself. Face it, I have all these great research and learning tools at my fingertips.

Thank you for the opportunity to learn so much.

Wikis Lesson #15

The funny thing about this lesson was that it was so easy, I didn't realize I had done it. I expected it to be much harder than it really was. My only question was how to I log onto the internet and start a Wiki? But, that will have to wait for another day. My brain is....

Wikis Lesson #14

I love the Wiki idea. I looked at several of the links and liked blogging libraries best. It seemed to have lots of ideas. I can certainly see where this would help all librarians. I was surprised that our own library wasn't on the list.

Mashup Lesson #21

I liked Photomunchrs and I think my grandchildren will really benefit from Quinturq Kids. I poked around in Colr Pickrs, too. The Google Mashup editor seemed confusing to me, but it's been a looooonnnnngggg morning, trying to catch up on 2.0 and I think my brain has "mashed up". Regret is a powerful thing. I regret I didn't do these a little at a time, so that I could absorb these lessons better. Oh well.

Mashups Lesson #20

Michael Wensch's Digital Ethnography should be a reality check for all libraries. Having complicated, cumbersome data bases is pointing libraries down a deadend road. With accurate, helpful, not to mention - easy to find, information on the web, why would anyone bump around in the dark? If the antiquated card catalog is just that, antiquated. Difficult data bases become useless.

Think about this...

How many people does it take to teach someone to use Google? Most of us have pecked and poked around all on our own. And most have mastered searching.

I worry about public and university libraries. They must evolve into a social gathering place to survive. But is that the goal? We must become user friendly, self explanitory, streamlined and selfhelpful, if that's a word.

That's what the video showed me.

Podcasting Lesson #19

Okay, I've been deported! So much for being part of the "next generation web citizen"! I am not sure how I got on such a rabbit trail, but I felt like Hansel & Gretel. Wherever it was it was going to cost me $7.95 a year and crashed my computer twice.
Fortunately, a kind woodsman (Brad) helped me find my way back!

YouTube Lesson #18

I have a 21 year old son (pictured here with my grandaughter), so I've known about YouTube for sometime and I find it a place you can literally let time slip away from you. One video leads to 1,000 more. I write for my church e-Newsletter and I put a YouTube video of one of our members music on the newsletter. It was amazing to me how many people ended up looking at his site. He went from 250 hits before the newsletter to well over 1,000 in just a matter of hours! I think it shows two things. One that the 320 people who subscribe to the newsletter are forwarding it on to others, but that YouTube is contagious.

I wonder if this will have any affect on the music industry as we know it today? So many people long for that "big break" and now they have the power in their own hands. Where will we go from here? There is no telling.

Zoho Writer Lesson 17

It is exciting to be a "next generation web citizen"!  cool  I feel like I'm changing as quickly as that first video we all watched when we started 2.0 learning.  Everyday I go home with new ideas.

The only problem I've got at this point, is that everytime I try to Preview what I've done it kicks me off.  But in theory I like it.  But, being new citizen might be the problem I'm having.  We'll see.

Web-based Applications Lesson #16

I liked Netvibes. When I get these lessons done (and win my Ipod) I'm going to really get into these sites. Page Flakes also looks very interesting.

Rollyo - Lesson #11

This is very cool. I think this would certainly save time and sanity. Thanks for sharing this information.

Library Thing Lesson #10

Very interesting. If I had more time, it would be fun to explore. I can certainly see where heavy readers and librarians would love this site. As far as the second part of the exercise. It seems like extra work to me to have to remember all these different websites to get to different things that are supposed to make life easier. But if I had done the lessons sooner I would have had more time to really examine them closer. I did like the calendar site: 30 blocks. I can see how people who need to coordinate from a distance would find that very useful.

Tagging On Flickr

Learning about Tagging certainly has broadened my Flickr site. When I'm not crunched for time to complete all 21 lessons of 2.0 I will try to have 75 tags on at least one picture in Flickr. Just for fun.

Tagging

I've had to go out of order, due to Library Thing resting for 5 minutes. So, here we go on Tagging. I searched Kalmar, that's the first name in the title of my book "The Kalmar Nyckel - Johan's Honor". Google had 15,900,000. When I did Kalmar on the library search I got 1 (my book). My observations are that the EKU library doesn't have much in the way of titled books on the ship the Kalmar Nyckel. I do understand that I am a strange duck and my interest are very different from most people I know.

So, that's my thoughts on Tagging. Being someone that does research when I write historical fiction, tagging is very important. I've not been on the other end of tagging though. It certainly gives me a different insight into researching.

RSS Searches

I wasn't real comfortable with the search links. I do like the RSS Feeds concept and will certainly keep an eye out for the buttons.

RSS Feeds

I really like this way of getting information. Of course, the first website I wanted to have as part of my list, wasn't available, but another one was. I can certainly see how this could get out of hand.

Facebook

Well, I've done it. I have a dorky picture, but that's me what can I say.

Social Networking

My question about social networking is...

Why do we need to feel so connected to everyone in the world? What is lacking in society today that makes us want to connect with total strangers?

Maybe, I'm just a private person, happily exsisting in my own world. I do like the aspect of being able to communicate with family that may be distant from me. That part of it is fun and exciting.

I still hang on the thought of "who cares what I'm eating for breakfast?" And truthfully, I don't care what they are eating either.

Mobile Again

Just as an FYI, I wanted to let anyone who was interested know, that I have my car back. It ended up that I was carless for 35 days!

Lot's of Fun

I really enjoy using and learning about Flickr. It makes me think about the early pioneers who moved to the new west and how they left their families, knowing they would never see them again. My, my, how things have changed.

Life Without A Car

Getting from point A to point B isn't so easy if you don't have a car. The next time you want to kick the tires or think of running your clunker over a cliff...STOP! I've just spent the last 34 days of my life without a car. What seems like a lifetime ago, we were on our way home from a lovely vacation when our car broke down on the side of the highway. We ended up stranded 500 miles from home and no way to get back.

Keep in mind we have a warranty on the car...We've pleaded our case to two dealerships, an attorney and Nissan Corporation, but to no avail. Nisson would do nothing.

Well, it is now 34 days later and the car is repaired, but still 500 miles away. I've learned to appreciate my wheels and the liberty to go when I want and where I want, at any time I want. I know I will eventually get my car back, but....

Take my advice...DON'T BUY A NISSAN.
